The Art of Cabinetry Creation Explained

Cabinets serve to be the perfect addition to our kitchen décor contributing in both looks and functionality. We turn very choosy while selecting our kitchen cabinetry keeping in mind that it should complement our overall kitchen décor. And that is all we have to do. However, what we do not know is the different steps that are followed for their construction.

Here are the different steps that lead to a perfect cabinet:

1. Basic Designs

The construction of cabinets can be divided into two fundamental designs namely, framed and frameless.

  • Framed Construction is recognized by the frame which outlines the front of the cabinet. In many different ways, the frame keeps the drawers and the doors separate. “Door overlay” means how much area of the drawer or the door is lying over the face fame. A full-overlay covers the face frame completely. A partial overlay covers a small portion. When the doors and the drawers are made in such a way that they fit perfectly within the cabinet framework, it is called a full inset.
  • Frameless Construction comprises of no frame to block a person’s reach. With the absence of the frame, the capacity of the drawer will increase and can be extended horizontally from one end to the other.
  • Other designs include base cabinets that are mounted to the floor and serve as support to countertops. Wall cabinets are attached against the wall and sometimes over the refrigerator, countertop or oven. Tall cabinets are base cabinets with greater height. They may stand on their own, or be attached to others.

2. Construction Materials

  • Solid wood – Separated boards and panels can be made to be joined to one another, but as long as the overall cabinetry design is made up of solid wood, it comes under the solid wood category.
  • Particle Board is the most cost-efficient and is made from wooden particles, chips and adhesives.
  • MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is made by pressurizing wooden fibers with an adhesive.
  • Plywood- Layers of wood which are fused using an adhesive in the sandwich design. To strengthen the product, the directions of the grain are made to be alternated between each panel.
  • Other materials include Plastic Laminate which is infused with plastic and paper and used for coating a cabinet surface, thus allowing for an easy cleaning. Not common like the wood options, however, full-metal stainless steel cabinets are manufactured as well.

3. Construction Types

  • When the two board ends are attached with a ‘V’-shaped cutout that interlocks the two, it is called “joinery” and the connecting attachments are known asdovetail
  • Mortise and Tenon include a post coming out of the end of a wood piece which fits securely into a hole that is carved into the other section of the wood.
  • A Dado is a grove-like structure that is cut into a wooden board thus allowing for the secure insertion of another piece of wooden board.

4. Finishing Styles

  • A painted finishis one of the most widely accepted finishes as there are countless colors. Though most people prefer sticking to a regular autumn shade, there are many of them who go for white e.g. white vintage style cabinetry. Vintage Kitchen Cabinets with their milky white hues are no less than artistic showpieces enhancing the cooking space that reflects your sophisticated and classy taste and personality.
  • Wood Stainis a popular application which tends to darken the wooden work, uplifting its usual grainy pattern. It is added with a sealer which acts as a protection for the glossy finish.
  • Varnishis a protective coating over the wooden work and any pre-existing surface treatment that may have been done. Varnish combines oil and resin.

5. End Process

The finishing procedure of a cabinetry differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. A large manufacturer may have a facility directed towards the building of kitchen cabinets at a single go while small-scale manufacturers may complete the task of each cabinet one by one or maybe even outsource them to others.
